Hernia

Definition:
Hernias are defects or weaknesses in the abdominal wall through which abdominal tissue protrudes.
Causes:
Hernias are caused by either a conginital defect (something you have had from birth) or due to a weakness in the abdominal wall in conjunction with heavy lifting.
Symptoms:
Most hernias do not produce symptoms and are located in the groin area. The protrusion usually goes away when one lies down. Discomfort from hernias usually results from the protrusion. They tend to get larger with time and will not go away spontaneously. When abdominal tissue or intestine becomes trapped in the hernia sac it is a nonreducible (incarcerated) hernia and is often painful. Prompt surgery is recommended to prevent strangulation of the intestine, which is a serious condition. Hernias are diagnosed by a thorough history and physical exam.
Treatment:
There are many options for hernia repair. The defect in the abdominal wall is usually repaired by reinforcing it with a mesh patch. This can be accomplished laparoscopically or by making an incision directly over the defect. Your surgeon will help you decide which type of repair is best for you. For more information about the various types of hernia repair, please visit the hernia section on the procedures page.
